Historical demography is a vibrant discipline in the realm of social sciences and humanities. A significant role in the development of historical demography is played not only by the growing scholarly interest in qualitative parameters of the population, that is, the parameters determined by historical development, but also the efforts of European governments, investing in demographic research to address their countries' demographic challenges. This approach is of special relevance to Russia, where the reflection about the past is riddled with controversies. Extreme forms of politicization of history in Russia at different stages provoked polar reactions, from nihilism to idealization of socio-demographic practices of the imperial, Soviet or post-Soviet periods. The project is aimed at bridging this research gap by restoring historical continuity and placing the current demographic situation into the general context of historical development. The research focuses on the family and on the familial and marital strategies that shape people's behaviour. These strategies, in their turn, are determined by tradition, on the one hand, and by external and internal pressures, on the other.
