On Saturday, December 11, the final stage of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Ural University Toponymic Expedition, one of the most famous dialectological expeditions in the world, took place.
The expedition works at the Chair of Russian Language, General Linguistics and Speech Communication (head of the chair and head of the expedition since 2002 – E.L. Berezovich). At the previous stages of the celebration, the staff of the department held conferences, wrote articles, talking about field work and summing up its results.
In 1961, under the leadership of the founder and first chief A.K. Matveyev, expedition made its first trip. Today, it has worked in thousands of settlements in the Middle and Polar Urals, the Russian North, the Upper Volga region, and Western Siberia. Conversations were held with many hundreds of informants, millions of fixations of linguistic facts were made, on the basis of which dozens of volumes of dictionaries and monographs were published, more than fifty dissertations of various ranks were defended.
Congratulations on this significant event to all those involved in the expedition! We wish you success in your future work!
