The NPT at 50: Challenges, Opportunities, and Russian National Interests
Dear colleagues!
We invite you to take part in the conference
“The NPT at 50: Challenges, Opportunities, and Russian National Interests”
that is to take place on November 24-25, 2020. The event will be held online by the Department of International Relations (Ural Institute of Humanities), the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, and the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority.
2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the entry into force of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the 25th anniversary of its indefinite and unconditional extension. The NPT remains the cornerstone of the global nuclear non-proliferation regime that has a long time been considered as one of the most resilient security regimes, and it was barely influenced by the dramatic transformation the world order underwent in the 1990s.
The failure to agree on a final document at the 2015 Review Conference, the lack of progress in arms control, and the emergence of the ban treaty put the regime in jeopardy. As the 2020 Review Conference that was to take place in New York this year is likely to be held in January 2021, the discussions about the NPT’s future continue. This conference aims at bringing experts together to discuss challenges the regime is facing and the ways forward. Being the successor to the USSR that ratified the Treaty on November 24, 1969, Russia continues to play a major role in sustaining the global nuclear non-proliferation regime. That is why it is important to identify challenges confronting the regime and how to achieve some progress despite these challenges.
Issues on the Agenda:
The working languages of the Conference are Russian and English.
